Ive got a 89 mercury sable its over heating its not the Thermo stat how do i tell if the water pump is out?

first of all its A mercury i mean its ford... i dont know how but always check the fans before thinking about the water pump n if its out.. u have to hear voice coming froenginenganin when u start it or make turns
