Could someone really sue you for clearing snow on the pavement?

There's a widespread belief in Britain that it's unwise to clear the snow off the pavement in front of your house, because if you do, and someone slips and injures themselves, they can sue you. Is there any genuine legal basis for this idea? Has anybody ever tried to sue someone for this reason? And if so, what happened?
