Is it safe to use boric acid as an ant killer around my 2 young dogs?

Recently I have started to notice lots of tiny black ants in my kitchen and on the floor coming in from the door in the dining room. I have been doing some looking to see how to get ride of them and the most used products seem to contain boric acid. Is it safe to use it around my puppies? If so, does anyone know any good ant killers?
