Questions about Catholic communion ?

So I was invited to attend a communion and I was just curious what it is done for and what its significance is. I'm not religious so if someone could explain this in simple terms I'd appreciate it. Basically could you give me some background info, the significance, requirements...etc ? Is there a certain age ? Any interesting tidbit will be appreciated, thank you in adv :)
