Do individual plats break off African-American hair?

I was wondering about getting plats in my hair but my mother said that i wouldn't want that because it breaks my hair or damages it at the root. She also said your hair is healthy and you should just get tracks not individuals and that my hair will be short and ruined. I said i think it will only break off if i don't have it done by the right person or if not professionally done.
